Paramount and Legendary’s “Street Fighter” is on course to lead the North American box office this weekend with about $US31 million, according to Saturday estimates reported by Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Studios report Sunday estimates on Monday morning AEDT.

The film, based on Capcom’s video game series, took $13 million on Friday, including $4 million from Thursday previews, across 3,575 cinemas. Its opening is below the $38.5 million debut of “Mortal Kombat II” in May, TheWrap reported. Audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore. Deadline reported the film cost a net $82 million, co-financed by Legendary and Capcom.

A24’s “You Can See Everything”, a three-hour documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, took about $5.5 million on Friday from 855 cinemas and is heading for $12 million to $14 million, Deadline reported; Variety cited rival estimates of $12.45 million. Deadline said that would be the second-best opening for a documentary, behind “Fahrenheit 9/11” ($23.9 million in 2004). It would pass the $7.1 million opening of “Melania” earlier this year, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter said.

Disney’s 20th Century Studios thriller “Whalefall” is tracking to about $7.5 million against a reported $60 million budget. Focus Features’ “Sense and Sensibility” is expected to take about $6.7 million.

Deadline estimated total weekend takings at about $101 million, 49% higher than the same weekend last year.
